Sharing Yan’s passion for flowers

Chelsea Flower Show: Nurseries June 3, 2012

The Great Pavilion is the centerpiece of the show where features all nurseries, flower growers, plant societies and florists.

Actually each nursery is specialized in a specific kind or family of flowers. In a very limited space (most stands are around 4-5 m2, the display or the merchandising is very important to valorize the flowers. I saw some nurseries with the same speciality, orchids for example, but their stands looked so different: some were more attractive than the others.

Of course the display varies also according to different types of flowers. Most long-stemmed cut flowers are displayed in a regular shape as a floral arrangement sticked in floral foam. My favorites are herbaceous “wild” style flowers that are often displayed as in the nature or in a cottage garden: meaning a voluntarily neglected style but carefully arranged in reality.

Here is the ranking of my favorite stands:

  • Gold Medal : Culm View Nursery, Herbaceous Perennial specialist

  •  Silver Medal: D’Arcy & Everest, Specialist Alpine Nursery & Gardens

  • Bronze Medal: (after hesitating for long) goes to Jacques Amand International, Bulbous Plants Specialist

Of course many other nurseries are of special interest. Here are more pictures.

My flower book (25): Lady Diana September 5, 2010

Following my last arrangement for Chanel, the composition of today has been created for another famous lady: the Princess Diana.

Yes it’s also a topic from my flower school’s homeworks. It’s about a sympathy arrangement to be placed in front of the statue of Pont de l’Alma, in Paris, where Lady Diana had her car accident and passed away.

I choosed Automn flowers and fruits to make a seasonal composition with chearful colors, instead of a conventional sad arrangement for this kind of occasions.

Flowers used in this arrangements are:

–  Chrysanthemum: Chrysanthemum/Chrysanthème/菊花

Gerbera: Gerbera/Gerbera/非洲菊

Hydrangea: Hortensia/Hydrangea/八仙花,绣球

Hypericum: Hypericum/Millepertuis/金丝桃,黄海棠

Amaranthus: Amaranthe/Joseph’s-coat/尾穗苋

– Rubus: Blackberry/Mûre/复盆子

Kniphofia: Torch Lily/Faux aloès/火炬百合

Nigella: Love in a Mist/Nigelles de Damas/黑种草

Spring at Justchrys March 21, 2010

I LAUGHED when I saw in the last “Justchrys spring 2010 newsletter” that the Secretary Day (April 15) is now called Administrative Professionals’ Day. Another invention of florists, of course. Definitely I find that florists have the sense of humor, and the sense of business too. In fact, many “floral holidays” are inventions of florists or have been promoted by florists, like the Saint Valentine’s Day, the Mother’s Day, the Grandmother’s Day, the Secretary Day, etc. Some of them have commercial success, the others failed. The Secretary Day didn’t have the popularity expected by florists, so apparently for this year they decided to include more target groups in their promotion campaign.

Having said that, my objectif was only to share with you the new spring collection of Justchrys. Always more creations and original ideas for the promotion of chrysanthemums. But when will they change the atmosphere of the main image? (See my previous critics about the images of Justchrys)

Critics : About Justchrys’ images November 2, 2009

I personally think that Justchrys has a good Marketing strategy, at least a new and daring one. Nevertheless, I don’t always appreciate their artistic photo creations. The world they build throughout their communication images is so artificial and distant that I think consumers wouldn’t easily be able to identify with this lifestyle and atmosphere.

Above is the Autumn picture on the front page of Justchrys‘ website. Well, I understand they wanted to associate the Chrysanthemum image to a more luxury and sensorial positioning, but the execution, in my opinion, is not at the height of the project.

I have done a little research in my image archives and have found two photos that I would use to represent the Chrysanthemum. The image of Chrysanthemums here is glamour and aspirational but remains natural and accessible.

Just 2dezign August 6, 2009

justchrys logo I am completely captivated by the work of the Dutch agency 2Dezign for Just Chrysanthemum, a co-operation of grower group Chryson Foundation and the Flower Council of Holland.

The intention of this project is to fully change the dull image of the chrysanthemum.  With 2Dezign’s practical know-how, market research and innovative thinking, this have used all kinds of fantastic ways to demonstrate the trendy and funky side of the chrysanthemum. This project contains every aspect of marketing the new, unconventional image of the flower, ranging from image and product photography, floral arrangements, advertising and POS materials.

A great beginning for another marketing approach in the flower industry.
